Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment, resulting in white patches on the skin. This occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment, are destroyed.

What is Vitiligo Surgery?

Vitiligo surgery involves various surgical techniques to restore skin color in individuals affected by vitiligo. It is usually considered when other treatments, such as topical medications and light therapy, do not yield satisfactory results.

Types of Vitiligo Surgery :

Autologous Skin Grafting

Procedure: Small sections of normal, pigmented skin are removed and transplanted to depigmented areas.

Ideal Candidates: Patients with stable vitiligo who have not responded to other treatments.

Blister Grafting :

Procedure: Blisters are created on the pigmented skin using suction. The tops of these blisters are removed and transplanted to depigmented areas.

Ideal Candidates: Those with small areas of vitiligo.

Cellular Grafting :

Procedure: Melanocytes and keratinocytes are extracted from a small piece of pigmented skin and then cultured. This cellular suspension is transplanted to depigmented areas.

Ideal Candidates: Suitable for larger areas and those with stable vitiligo.

Micropigmentation (Tattooing) :

Procedure: Pigments are implanted into the skin, similar to tattooing.

Ideal Candidates: Suitable for sensitive areas like lips and for patients seeking cosmetic improvement.
